  • Bock is a special style of German beer that has a number of sub-styles. This first block of the list is a very traditional example and one that claims to be the “first” block. Books are known for their dark, malty style and Einbecker is where the block was developed.
  • Overview There are two main kinds of what people tend to call Gothic letters: the German Frakturs and the English Blackletter. The Frakturs have an x that looks like an r with a mysterious disease, and the Blackletters have fiddly bits in the middle like those you see in this Old English Text.

Old German Typeface

In Italy the German blackletter style was soon replaced with typefaces inspired by Roman inscriptions. Still based on hand lettering, these fonts have the characteristics of angled crossbars on the letter ‘e’ and a high stress which relates to how a scribe would hold a pen. Centaur and Jenson are modern fonts in the Humanist style. Bacon, onions and pickles are wrapped in thin slices of flank steak, browned in butter, then simmered in beef broth. Serve with spaetzle to soak up the gravy. This is a notice from the Nazi times, that clearly points out that the Gothic, Black-Face lettering which was used all over Germany, even in school text books (see below), was seen as a real sign of “German-ness”. It’s hard for us to read now, but that was partly the idea.
